TENS (Transcutane Electrical Nervous Stimulation)
The most important effects when treating a horse with TENS are the reduction of pain and the reduction of muscle spasms. The effect is caused due to the physiological influence of this electrotherapy on the body: The (strong/fast) mechanical impulse caused by the TENS reduces deep muscle spasms and – due to the Gate Control Theory – eliminates the (slow/weak) pain impulse in the brain. TENS is an electrotherapeutic tool which has been used on humans for years with beneficial effects. The mechanical pumping of the muscle increases the blood flow and the vicious circle of muscle spasm can be interrupted.
Instabilities around the sacroiliac joint can also be reduced using particular techniques with the TENS.
